Blocking internet connection for a specific application

Is there any way to block internet connection for a specific application (like Empathy or firefox etc) via IP tables?
(Not using proxy server)

I’ve found a very good explanation to that here: http://serverfault.com/questions/550276/how-to-block-internet-access-to-certain-programs-on-linux

I hope it helps
